Residents Council

The Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home, Residents’ Council is intended & designed to form the collective voice of all of our Residents at NHNH. Each Resident has the right to participate in the Residents’ Council.

The NHNH Residents’ Council, meets regularly to discuss ideas &/or concerns regarding all aspects of care & therapeutic recreational activities, in the home.  Residents provide advice & recommendations to the licensee regarding what the Residents would like to see done to improve care or the quality of life at NHNH & to provide peer to peer support.

Through the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, every licensee of a long-term care home must ensure that a Residents’ Council is established at the home. Every licensee of a long-term care home must also appoint a Residents’ Council Assistant who is acceptable to that council to assist the Residents’ Council.

Family Council

The Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home, Family Council is a group of family members (past & present) &/or friends of our Residents who gather together regularly for peer support, education & to enhance the overall experience for all.

  • Family Councils can be a great source of mutual support to family members & offer guidance to new families during their transition to LTC
  • Meetings provide a mechanism for family members to learn & gain an understanding of the home & how it operates i.e. guest speakers from the community & from within the long-term care home, to present information/resources on various topics
  • They advocate regarding collective concerns to improve residents’ quality of life. Councils can bring concerns to the administration of the home & make suggestions for improvements
  • Provide an opportunity for families to be informed about what is happening in the home
